This post includes a free goal setting form for your personal use*. You can download the file here Download GoalsTool.xls (You'll need Microsoft Excel or a compatible reader to open it.)
Goal setting isn't always as simple as it sounds, but it is a powerful way to get more performance out of every aspect of your life. For a more detailed discussion of goal setting methods, you can check out my previous post on the subject.
Because I work with clients who are sometimes setting goals for the first time, I've developed a simple excel tool to help them walk through a goal setting process. The process has six steps for each goal:
1. What is the Situation Now?
2. How would I like things to be Different?
3. What is my initial plan for getting what I want?
4. When will I have this plan completed?
5. How will I know if I am successful?
6. What kinds of support or information do I need to get started?
It's no great surprise that people who clearly set out goals in writing are more likely to achieve the goals than those who keep goals fuzzy and in their heads. If you don't have a clearly articulated set of goals for your professional and personal life - I encourage you to set aside an hour this week to walk through this tool and get started.
To get even more benefit from goal setting, set the goals out in a place where you can read them regularly (daily is best, but even weekly is good). Put regular "check in points" on your calendar to assess how far you have come, plan a reward for achieving your goals (a new business book or a massage are nice options), and if you need more support, trade goals with a friend and keep each other motivated by checking in.
If you have any feedback on the tool or comments on goal setting you can get in touch with me.
* For anything other than personal use, get permission first.

That sheet is an awesome goals tool.... thank you for sharing... :)
Staying positive is easier with a series of achieved goals, and a positive attitude can do wonders for the motivation of a person. Setting a goal is one thing, but staying motivated and on track is the key to ultimately achieving the goal and setting even higher goals to go after.
